Straight from MWLUG 2011, Robert will present an extended version of his historical overview of social media. The ability to communicate instantly across vast distances and forge relationships with people who never meet face to face is not just a modern phenomenon. Many of the challenges of today's social media were encountered over one hundred and fifty years ago with the advent of a new technology called the telegraph, the information superhighway of its day. In this instructive and entertaining session we look back on how the people of the nineteenth century responded to this new technology and became the first consumers of electronic social media. We will look at how the technology impacted personal relationships, businesses, news reporting, governments, and international diplomacy, and how it had a major impact on the American Civil War and enabled Abraham Lincoln to become one of the most connected presidents in history.
