Security and Compliance is NOT an Option! - MWLUG/CollabSphere 2018

Image
Time and time again developers create cool applications that users love.  Whether it is a web or mobile application their primary focus is on the UI and user interaction.  From the design and user-ability perspective that it is important.  However, majority of these applications are designed and built  without the consideration of data security or whether it compiles to government compliance and regulations.  Including security and following government dictated regulations seems to be an after thought.  Data security and compliance should not be an after thought, but part of your core design.  So as part of MWLUG/CollabSphere 2018, we have an entire track focused to Security and Compliance.   We hope to see everyone there at CollabSphere 2018 at the Sheraton Hotel in Ann Arbor, MI from July 23 to 25, 2018. To register go to  http://collabsphere.org/ug/collabsphere2018.nsf/register.html. Here is a list of Security and Com...

All Good Things Must Come to an End and the New Hope and Direction

Image
MWLUG 2017 was our most successful MWLUG conference we have ever had. With over 232 registered and a small number of cancellations, MWLUG 2017 was the most attended and largest conference. We had over 60 sessions, workshops and round tables with speakers from all over the United States and Europe. Over a third of the sessions were non-IBM specific and included sessions covering new topics like MongoDB and GDPR. In tuned with our theme this year, Moving Collaboration Forward, our goal was to expand our conference this year forward towards a new direction and not just cover the usual. The world of collaboration is changing. No longer does a solution stand by itself nor does a solution just involve components from a single vendor. Companies need to chose the best of breed and integrate solutions together. Sometimes it involves solutions from many vendors. This is a direction that IBM is moving towards with Cisco and Box. At the same time we see customers moving away from the IBM stac...

When The Human Community Saved the World - MWLUG 2014 - Part II - Announcing the MWLUG 2014 OGS Guest Speaker

Image
When The Human Community Saved the World - MWLUG 2014 - Part I Last year at MWLUG 2013 through the great efforts of Sam Bridegroom from Bridegroom Technologies, we able to have Iraq veteran and community spokesman Josh Bleill from the Indianapolis Colts to be our Opening General Session Guest Speaker. This year was a challenge.  How can we duplicate the incredible presentation that Josh did in MWLUG 2013 and deliver to our ICS community similar expectations.  We wanted to really capture the essence of the MWLUG 2014 theme, "Connecting the Human Community" and what a community, a collection of us can do together and for each other. We all go through hard times and challenges in our lives.  And our ICS community members are going through these challenges professionally and sometimes personally.  It is our community of colleagues and friends that helps us through these challenges. Our Greatest Generation endured the hardship of the...

When The Human Community Saved the World - MWLUG 2014 - Part I

Too often in our technology focused world we become no more than bits of data.  We become less and less social and feel lost within our technology. Communities for Generation X, Y is all about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media.  However, a community in the past was all about people and individuals.  Technology is just a vehicle to connect individuals, no different than hundreds if not thousands of year ago when stories and our history was told by the bonfire.  Our goal each year at MWLUG is to bring everyone together in person to share our knowledge and experience so that we can grow our community as people have done in the past. Only through the test of time, will we know the impact of our ICS community in the fabric of technology.  However, there was one amazing community of men and women despite all odds save our world as we know it. Over 70 years ago, the human race was tested to its greatest extend and our freedom, our democracy that ...

MWLUG 2010 and Vacation

I am back from vacation. We had a wonderful time in Minnesota. We visited my son who is interning in Minneapolis this summer. Afterwards, we went up to Duluth and Grand Marias near the Canadian border. It is very beautiful up there and peaceful. The last time I was up here was for a client meeting. We did hiking at Gooseberry Falls State Park, Cascade Falls State Park, and Jake Cooke State Park. It was refreshing compared to the terrible traffic of Minneapolis. Construction delays were amazing. The traffic was equal or worst than Chicago and we are very bad here. Maybe next time, I will bring my bike and bike the 120 miles between Duluth and Grand Marias. Being on vacation, gives me time to reflect on what is important. It is not the Lotus technology and what is the coolest technology, but family. It amazes me every single day how wonderful my wife and kids are. It is with their support that make my professional life possible. Anyway, now that I am back from the wilderness,...
