Presenting the October 2025 OpenNTF Webinar: Creating a Service Oriented Architecture Platform with Domino

Join me for the October 2025 OpenNTF Webinar. I will be presenting " Creating a Service Oriented Architecture Platform with Domino." This webinar  will take place on October 16th at 10:00 AM CDT. Abstract Service-oriented architecture (SOA) uses software components called services to create business applications. In many cases, SOA platforms are distributed and utilize message queue or service bus to transfer data and requests between servers that handle different services. This approach allows one to scale up the platform when needed. The architecture of HCL Domino unfortunately was design before the concept of SOA and does not include message queue or service bus within its architecture. Or does it?  In this session, Richard Moy will present how you can utilize what Domino already has and create your own SOA architecture based on Domino. We will also discuss why Domino provides some key advantages over other technologies. To register for this webinar, go to  https://att...

Integration of Microsoft VS Code with Domino, a Hack

Image
Many components make up a Web application some of which includes CSS and JavaScript. Both CSS and JavaScript has rapidly evolved over the many years that Domino has been used as a Web Application Server.  Unfortunately, the editors in Domino Designer has not evolved and you can not add and edit JavaScript ES6 code for example. The new Domino 14.5 I have been told allows one to edit ES6 JavaScript as a file resource, but not as a JavaScript script library file. One of the most popular tools for editing CSS and JavaScript is Microsoft VS Code. There are some many extensions that you can download and work with many different programming languages.  One very nice thing about Microsoft VS Code is that it is free and most developers are familiar with VS Code. In addition, it is much nicer of an editor than what is available in the Domino Designer.  There was discussions about VS Code integration with Domino at one of the past CollabSphere a few years ago.  Unfortunately, t...

When your Tool is a Hammer, Everything is a Nail, Transformation of Domino - Part 2

The recent announcement by IBM to continue the development and support for the IBM Domino platform indefinitely was great timing for part 2 of this series. This series is about the direction that we are taking Domino. This journey has taken more than five years with many different designs and experiments to get to where we are in our iPhora technology. You can find Part 1 of this series  here .  There are many tools and solutions out there from many vendors for "Modernizing" a Notes application. But what does that really mean?  In most cases, that means replacing the Notes application interface with a Web interface and making a better UI experience for the user. But for us application modernization is not just about the front-end but also but how the data is collected, managed, stored and processed. How it integrates with outside third-party services. Most Domino application modernization leaves the data untouched in the same structure. XPages mimics the Notes applica...

Creating Bootstrap Widgets Using Dojo at ATLUG

Thanks to Lisa and Darren Duke, I will be presenting at ATLUG on May 19, 2016 on combining my two favorite open source frameworks, Twitter Bootstrap and Dojo, to create widgets that your can use in your web-based application. This presentation is not XPages specific. The presentation will be held at the IBM Technical Exploration Center in Atlanta. So if you are a web developer using or thinking about using Dojo and Bootstrap come join me or to just listen to me rant and rave. IBM Corp  (Building A) 6303  Barfield Rd.,  NE Atlanta ,  GA   30328 Technical   Exploration   Center Creating Bootstrap Widgets Using Dojo Twitter Bootstrap is one of the most popular responsive CSS frameworks available. Dojo is one of the most comprehensive and powerful JavaScript framework available. However, Bootstrap only comes with jQuery-based widgets by default. But if you can only combine Bootstrap and Dojo together, you as designers and develo pers w...

How to destroy a nice application? Have it run on IE

Damn IE. I have been working for months on an application that uses a lot of Dojo. It is a fairly complex application with the user interface sitting all on one page with 5 dialog box, data grids, lots of xhrPosts and xhrGets, and many other visual affects. Of course everything works on Chrome and Firefox, but it crashes on IE during testing yesterday. Now I have to spend an enormous amount of time debugging why it crashes in IE. I suspect it is the datagrid which is very sensitive.
